Iyorchia Ayu

Iyorchia Ayu is a Nigerian sociologist and politician who served as the 5th President of the Nigerian Senate (December 1992 - November 1993) during the Third Republic, later held several federal ministerial portfolios, and served as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from October 2021.

Ayu was born on 15 November 1952 in Gboko, Benue State.

Ayu lectured in Sociology at the University of Jos, including courses on Marxism, and chaired the Jos University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Ayu was elected Senator for Benue North-West on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform during Nigeria's Third Republic, and was elected the 5th President of the Nigerian Senate in December 1992. He was impeached in November 1993 after opposing the Interim National Government. He subsequently served as Federal Minister of Education (1993-98) under General Sani Abacha, and as Federal Minister of Industry (1999-2001), Internal Affairs (2003-2005), and Environment (2005) under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He headed Vice President Atiku Abubakar's 2007 presidential campaign, and was elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on 31 October 2021, a role from which he was suspended in March 2024.

One of a small number of Tiv politicians to have led the Nigerian Senate. Held four separate federal ministerial portfolios across two administrations.

As a Senate President and multiple-term federal minister, Ayu has been a central figure in national Nigerian politics across three decades, and played a leading role in national PDP leadership in the 2020s.
