People who shaped Tiv history
This section profiles Tiv men and women whose lives left a mark on their communities, on Nigeria and beyond. It covers traditional rulers and soldiers, politicians and judges, scholars, clergy, artists, athletes and members of the diaspora. Each profile gives the person's background, their role and achievements, and the legacy they left, with sources where they are known.
From lineage elders to the Tor Tiv
Before colonial rule, Tiv society had no king. Authority rested with the elders of each lineage. The office of Tor Tiv, the paramount ruler, was created in 1946, and the five men who have held it are profiled under Traditional Leadership. The twentieth century also brought new kinds of public life: service in the Nigerian Army, in national and state politics, in the courts and the universities. Many of the most familiar Tiv names come from these fields.
