Gabriel Suswam

Gabriel Torwua Suswam is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who represented Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives (1999-2007) before serving two terms as Governor of Benue State (2007-2015), and later as Senator for Benue North-East (2019-2023).

Suswam was born on 15 November 1964 in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area, Benue State.

He studied Law at the University of Lagos (1986-89) and attended the Nigerian Law School, Lagos (1989-90), being called to the Nigerian Bar in 1990.

Suswam practised law at various firms from 1990 to 1994, before establishing his own legal practice.

Suswam was elected to the House of Representatives for Katsina-Ala/Ukum/Logo Federal Constituency in 1999 and re-elected in 2003, chairing the House Services Committee, the Committee on the FCT, the Committee on Appropriation (from 2003), and the Committee on Power (from 2005). He was elected Governor of Benue State on 29 May 2007 and re-elected in April 2011, serving until 29 May 2015. In 2019, he was elected Senator for Benue North-East, a seat he lost in the 25 February 2023 election to Emmanuel Udende; his subsequent tribunal challenge to the result was dismissed by the Court of Appeal.

Served two terms as Governor of Benue State after eight years in the House of Representatives.
