Alfred Akawe Torkula

His Royal Majesty, Begha U Tiv, Orchivirigh Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkula, CFR, was the fourth Tor Tiv, the supreme ruler of the Tiv people, and Chairman of the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers. He ascended the throne on the principle of rotation (ya na angbian) between the two sons of Tiv, Ichongu and Ipusu. An Ihyarev man and son of Ichongo, he became the second Tor Tiv to come from the Ichongo extraction. He reigned from 1991 until his death in 2015.

Alfred Akawe Torkula was born on 10 July 1944 at Tse-Torkula, Mbadwem District, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. He began his education at Tiv N.A. Elementary School, Gboko (1953-58), followed by St. Theresa's Catholic Primary School, Naka (1959). He attended Mt. Saint Michael's Secondary School, Aliade (1960-64), before proceeding to Kings College, Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Torkula furthered his studies at the University of Besançon, France, where he obtained a B.A. (Hons) and DEFE, specializing in the French Language, graduating in 1971. He later earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology, and was awarded honorary LL.D and D.Sc. degrees by the University of Ibadan and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, respectively.

Torkula began his career in the civil service of the former Benue-Plateau State, continuing in Benue State following its creation in 1976. He spent over two decades in the civil service, rising to Permanent Secretary and Director-General. In April 1989, he was appointed Commissioner for Local Government Affairs under the administration of Colonel Fidelis Makka, becoming a member of the Benue State Executive Council. He also served as Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (March 1994 - November 2001), and later of the University of Calabar. At the time of his death, he was Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

In 1991, Alfred Akawe Torkula ascended the throne as the fourth Tor Tiv, following the customary rotational principle (ya na angbian) between the Ichongo and Ipusu lineages, and also became Chairman of the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers, a position he held until his death.

He inherited a Tiv society troubled by the Jukun-Tiv crisis in Taraba and internal boundary disputes within Benue State. He emphasized peace and unity among the Tiv people, threatening to depose any district or clan head found instigating crisis, and his interventions through the Tiv Traditional Council helped curb inter-communal conflict.

He introduced chieftaincy titles to recognize and unite deserving individuals within Tiv society, conferring the title of Zege Mule U Tiv ("the great shade of the Tiv"), the land's highest traditional title, on the late Alhaji Aliyu Mohammed, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and later on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He also conferred the title of Asor-Tar-U-Tiv ("one who heals the land of Tiv") on former British colonial officer Martin Dent.

He initiated structural reforms within the Tiv Traditional Council, expanding district leadership by creating 14 second-class stools, and proposed six additional first-class stools and 60 third-class chiefdoms within the Tiv Area Traditional Council. His reign also faced hindrances from political interference, which he argued underscored the need for legislative change to grant the traditional institution greater autonomy.

Published several books preserving Tiv cultural heritage, including 'Death and Burial Customs of the Tiv People of Central Nigeria,' 'The Cosmology in Tiv Worldview,' 'The Tiv Woman: Challenges and Prospects,' 'Presidential Democracy in Nigeria: Grassroots Experience,' and 'The Culture of Partisan Politics in Nigeria: A Historical Perspective.' Reformed the Tiv Traditional Council's structure, expanding district leadership. Honoured as Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).

As the fourth Tor Tiv, Torkula presided over the Tiv traditional institution during a period of significant internal and external conflict, and is credited with helping restore peace between the Tiv and neighbouring groups. His scholarship and publications on Tiv cosmology, customs, and gender roles remain significant works of Tiv cultural documentation, and his introduction of new chieftaincy titles reshaped the structure of Tiv traditional recognition.

Torkula championed the preservation of Tiv cultural heritage against societal shifts he viewed as eroding traditional norms, opposing practices such as exorbitant bride prices and exploitative fundraising traditions. He distinguished Tiv royal presentation by adopting a leopard-skin cap and beads reflecting Bantu heritage, rather than the turban customary among northern Nigerian traditional rulers, as a deliberate assertion of Tiv cultural identity. He was described by the Sultan of Sokoto, Dr. Abubakar Sa'ad II, as "an educationist who ensured that his people moved from the level of illiteracy to literacy; a businessman who created avenues for incomes for many of his subjects."
