A climbing savanna shrub known in Nigeria as okoho or afato, valued for the mucilage in its stem.

Used across Nigeria for sore breast, indigestion, venereal disease, intestinal parasites, and swelling.

The stem bark's mucilage is used as a soup thickener in Northern Nigeria and specifically by the Idoma of Benue State; the fruit is also eaten in soups.
