Bauhinia; Pod mahogany bauhinia

Bauhinia rufescens
Kpan-nyihar

A many-branched shrub or small tree of dry Sahelian woodland, now classified by botanists as Piliostigma rufescens; it has the distinctive twin-lobed leaves typical of the Bauhinia group.

Leaves are used traditionally as a stomachic and for diarrhoea, dysentery, and fever; root extracts serve as an astringent and antipyretic.

A hardy shrub of arid and semi-arid Sahel and Sudan savanna, tolerant of poor, dry soils.
