Bark and leaf preparations are used across Africa for fever, malaria, diarrhoea, wounds, and toothache; twigs are chewed as a traditional toothbrush.

The ripe fruit is eaten fresh and the leaves are used in brewing traditional alcoholic beverages in some areas.
