Through the 1920s, Tiv communities resisted colonial monetary taxation and forced labour on infrastructure projects, escalating to armed confrontation with colonial outposts by 1929.
Colonial taxation and compulsory labour on roads, railways and administrative buildings — both alien impositions on Tiv society — met sustained resistance through the 1920s. Tiv warriors, armed with spears and bows against British firearms, attacked colonial outposts and infrastructure; the colonial response reportedly included burning villages and killing or capturing resistance leaders.
