This lesson walks through the alphabet in A–Z order with the native pronunciation of each letter. It is a quick way to hear every letter in one sitting and to see which letters of the English alphabet Tiv uses and which it leaves out.
Comparing Tiv and English letters
The Tiv alphabet is written with Latin letters, but it is not identical to the English alphabet. Some English letters are not used in Tiv words, and some that are used have a different sound. C is the best-known example: it always sounds like "ch". The table below sets each Tiv letter beside its English counterpart, so you can see at a glance where the two match and where they differ.
How to practise
Watch the video and say each letter after the speaker. Then try saying the whole alphabet in order without the video, and check yourself against the table. Because Tiv spelling closely follows pronunciation, knowing the letters well will let you read and sound out new words with confidence.
