The Abaji Kingdom, headed by the Ona of Abaji, is described by Wikipedia as the oldest traditional institution in the Federal Capital Territory, and the Ona chairs the FCT Council of Chiefs. According to Wikipedia, the land was formerly under the old Koton Karfe kingdom and joined the Federal Capital Territory for development; the kingship was won by the Egbura from the Bassa, and the Egbura ruled while allowing the Hausa to keep the office of Imam of the town's Muslims. The present Ona, Alhaji Adamu Yunusa, chairs the FCT Council of Chiefs (News Agency of Nigeria, March 2026). Bala Ahmad Shere, the Jagaban Shere Koro, told Daily Trust in 2018 that Abaji was the only stool the FCT administration inherited at third class and that it was raised to first class.
