The Adamawa State Council of Chiefs (also called the Council of Chiefs and Emirs) brings together the state's leading traditional rulers. For many years it was chaired by the Lamido of Adamawa; Wikipedia describes Lamido Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha as its chairman in 2010. In December 2024 the State Assembly passed the Adamawa State Chiefs (Appointment and Deposition) law, which removed the Lamido as permanent chairman: the chairmanship is to rotate annually among the first-class emirs and chiefs. The law also empowers the governor to establish emirates and to appoint or remove traditional rulers (21st Century Chronicle, 12 December 2024). Earlier that month the governor had signed the District Creation Law 2024, creating 83 new districts, and on 23 December he announced seven new emirates and chiefdoms (Daily Trust). The council's full membership was not found.
